The used summer clothing, household items and toys are delivered to various community distribution outlets including the Queen Elizabeth Orphanage and a Planned Parenthood chapter. This year's campaign was particularly fulfilling for Fair since the 33rd Girl Guide Troupe of Falgarwood adopted her initiative as a special pro ject. In response to Fair's request for clothing, small gift items and candy for a Christmas party, they began formulating apian. "I saw the article in the paper and thought it was a way for the girls to get involved in a worthwhile cause," explained Guide Leader Margaret Smith. "I attached the article to a newsletter that was sent home to their parents and it grew from there." Smith says the troupe of 20 girls aged nine to 12-years-old, assembled an assortment of new personal items in gift boxes including socks and underwear, toiletries, pencils, pens, Beanie Babies, candy and necklaces they made themselves. One youngster even created a box with a Canadian theme. The girls' families also went that extra mile donating baby clothes and dresses in immaculate condition, cot ton blankets and summer clothing. The troupe sorted, packed and carefully labeled all donations before delivering them to Fair. "We're want to adopt this as an on-going project sending items for other special occasions during the year," Smith added, "and maybe corresponding with some of the children. This was a wonderful learning experience for them. They had fun, but also learned living in Canada is a privilege and there are children in other parts of the world who are less fortunate. It's also what the true meaning of Christmas is all about." Fair plans on visiting the troupe in the New Year to show them a yideo and to answer all their questions about the children of Grenada. Fair's core group of vol unteers helped out with the sorting and packing as they have in year's past. Volunteer Fiona Honocks said her friends, Maijorie and Eddie Minialofs, of Schomberg, donated hun dreds of dollars worth of new items for the children's party. "Maijorie had a ball going to the dollar store and SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER This year's annual clothing drive for Grenada was the best year ever reports organizer Joan Fair, of Bronte. "More than 50 boxes were sent to Grenada this year," beamed Fair. "Oakville really came through once again and I'm so grateful. I'd come home from work to find boxes of clothes waiting for me."
