Saturday, December 25, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER B15 S p o rtsfiaiw D a y An O akville B eaver F eature Editor N O R M N E L S O N 845-3824 (Extension Oakville photographer Peter McCusker caught this triple-A pee wee game Monday night at River Oaks Arena between the Oakville Rangers and Stoney Creek. In the top photo, an unidentified Oakville player comes crashing to the ice and in the bottom photo, Oakville captain Nick Dodge is tied up on the boards as he watches a race for the puck. Oakville managed to free themselves up enough to earn an emphatic 11-2 win, and that was with eight double-A pee wee call ups filling in for injured or suspended players. See story below of the Quebec bound Oakville team (which does not include this game, full results of which will be published later in the Beaver). Photos by Peter C. McCusker 255) Fax:337-5567 Oakville will be hockey central over the Christmas Holidays with the Minor Oaks Hockey Association host ing a huge 72-team rep tournament from Dec. 27-30th. Teams will be divided into eight divisions (both triple-A and double-A) at the `minor' level -- minor novice (8 years), minor atom (10 years), minor peewee (12 years) and minor bantam (14 years). Games will be played at Oakville Arena, Maplegrove, River Oaks A & B, Kinoak and Ice Sports, and like all regular season games for the Oakville Rangers rep teams, admission is free. Each division will also feature a three-on-three tourney. Patrons will have the opportunity to purchase a tournament program, which has a lucky prize draw ticket included. Chairperson Bob Woloschuk noted that this year's tournament is the largest ever, up from 57 last year and 48 in `97. He said there's "over 40 hockey hotbeds involved." The opening games kick off bright and early on Monday, Dec. 27 with 8 a.m. games at Oakville Ice Sports on rinks 1, 2 & 3. It will come to an end with championship games, depending on the particular division, on Wednesday and Thursday (Dec. 29/30). See adjacent schedule. It's open, now, for all those who would like to use this high tech and nearly instantaneous form o f com munication for their press releases, rep and house * league reports. For the first little while, it wouldn't hurt for you elec tronic contributors to drop a line ju st to ensure that we can access your files proper It seems to me that this just underscores how fast things continue to change in this high-tech age. Gosh, I remember start ing in this business ju st two decades ago on the old Underwood typewriters. Dumb machines they were, with not one meg of memo ry, and completely and utter ly manual. The old key pad sure has come along way, baby. Absolutely everything is now done through this key pad. The stories are all com posed and edited on the computer. Then when it comes time to put out an issue, it's all done, here, as well. It's really quite amaz ing. The newspaper page starts to take shape with sto ries and ads zapped in along with the headlines and full colour photos. Even the fax machine is becoming outdated with email even more convenient. No doubt, as we greet the new M illennium, the pace of change will only continue to skyrocket. Speaking of the new mil lennium, I'm one o f those who like to make resolu tions. One work related res olution is to get the rep and house league reports running even more smoothly. We still guarantee that all rep and house league reports submitted get published, which, I think, is rare for a community o f this size. And as I write this, all house league reports and virtually all rep reports handed in this hockey sea son have been published. In the new M illennium, I aim to do one better, and get them in on a more timely basis. And, for a final piece of important business ... Season's best, folks. W ishing you all the best at this Christmas time as we get ready to usher in the new Millennium. ty- 1 -2 :1 5 p .m ., 3 -o n -3 com petition at Ice S po rts 1 Dec 29 Dec 29 Dec 29 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME BLUE POOL: OAKVILLE RANGERS. The Rangers are participating in the Bell Challenge Cup Dec. 26-31, featuring 20 of the top peewee teams in Ontario, Michigan, New York, and Illinois. The Rangers would like to express their appreciation for the support of all of their major sponsors: J.D. Electric, Giffin Contractors, Southern Era, Mastercard, Gatsteel Industries, Canadian Tire Stores (Oakville), Polywheels, Nortel Networks, Commercial Manufacturing, KCR Investments, and Norlite Financial Services. The Rangers would also like to thank the many friends and families that supported their recent Christmas Poinsettia sale, as well as the many local businesses and professionals that are sponsoring the Rangers 2000 Calendar and their upcoming Peewee AAA Ranger Team Program. All of the above-mentioned activities come as a direct result of their selection to the prestigious Quebec International Peewee Championships, Feb. 10-22. This Tournament fea tures approximately 100 teams from around the world. The Oakville team is entered in the Elite International Division facing the top teams from Europe and Russia. Here's a look at recent results ... Oakville 3, Halton Hurricanes 2 (Dec. 10): recent bouts of flu, bronchitis, and injuries could not halt the Rangers' win ning ways. Missing three of their forwards, the Rangers still outshot host Halton 25-17 and mustered enough energy to score the winning goal on a strong backhand by Daniel Hannigan-Daley with only a minute left on the clock. Other Oakville goals were scored by Mario Mancuso (playing for ward versus his regular blue line duties) and Charlie Giffin. Assists were recorded by Brad McKenzie, Andy MacDonald, and Ben Heersink. Oakville 2, Windsor Spitfires 2 (Dec. U): the two top teams in the west and east conferences of the league put their respective 15-1-1 records on the line this weekend. Host Oakville was still short three of their key forwards captain -- Nick Dodge, and assistant captains Nick Davis and Tyler Donati. Supported by Jordy McMillan from the AA squad, however, the Rangers were full value for the opening game. The Spitfires tied the game with just six minutes on the clock, and despite pressing hard in the final seconds on a power play, the hometown Rangers could not get the go-ahead marker. Matt Pike was solid in goal for the Rangers stopping 24 of 26 shots while goals were scored by Charlie Giffin and Justin Donati. Assists were recorded by Ben Heersink, Brad McKenzie (2) and Daniel Hannigan-Daley. Oakville 7, Windsor Spitfires 2 (Dec. 12): game two of this series found a rejuvenated Oakville team with the return of Nick Dodge and Nick Davis. The Spitfires scored the lone goal of the first period with goaltender Chris Rowan making a couple of key saves to keep it close. The Rangers with a near complete line-up picked up the pace in the second period with solid passing plays and great two-way play. The speed of the Rangers and their extensive physical training consistently proves itself valuable in the latter parts of most games. Oakville scored six straight goals in the second and third peri ods (two on power plays), before Windsor replied in the third. Scoring for Oakville were Nick Prescott (2), Graham Tough, Charlie Giffin, Mario Mancuso, Justin Donati, and Nick Dodge. Assists from Brad McKenzie (2), Prescott, Bret Lain, Dodge, and Daniel Hannigan-Daley. Oakville 7, Guelph 3 (Dec. 13): rumours had spread throughout the dressing room that even though there were 10 games left in the season, a victory tonight would clinch first place in the east region of their division. With this in mind and despite four games in five days, the Rangers came out strong once again with Bret Lain scoring the opener just minutes into the game. The Rangers stuck to their game plan of strong twoway skating and opened up the entire ice surface with excep tional passing plays and impressive offense in front of the Guelph net. The Guelph goaltender was faced with a barrage of 45 shots in keeping the Rangers from running up the score. Other goals by Oakville Brad McKenzie (2), Nick Dodge, Nick Davis, Charlie Giffin, and Justin Donati. Assists from McKenzie (2), J. Donati (2), Hannigan-Daley (2), Daniel Ringwald, Graham Tough, Giffin, Connor Farris, Dodge, and Andy MacDonald. date Dec Dec Dec Dec.
