The group ordered 150 mugs bearing an artis tic rendering of a wheelchair user in motion, and the slogan `The Faster The Better' and sold the entire stock in two weeks, states its brochure. The group learned that by working together and shar ing tasks, much could be accomplished. The stylized wheelchair has become the com pany's logo, chosen by its president and webmas ter Rex Stephenson of Oakville. And `The Faster the Better' remains as COARE's slogan. The web site was designed by M arkit Publishing of Oakville - however Stephenson came up with the logo. "W e're getting between 50 and 100 hits a week on our web site," he told an Open House held ear lier this fall at The Enterprise Centre at Hopedale Mall. "I would like to have that every day if we could." A number of those hits have resulted in sales. The web site has been running since June. "Our top seller is the diabetic socks," says Paul Fernandes, CO A RE's marketing manager and the group's spokesperson. "They allow the feet to breath and help keep moisture away from the skin." He added all of the sheepskin products are washable. Fernandes explained COARE received finan cial assistance from CEEP, the Community Entrepreneurial Enterprises Project, an organiza tion representing Erinoak, the community at large, and The Enterprise Centre at Hopedale Mall. "COARE began as an initiative of Erinoak Children's Treatment Centre to assist former clients to explore the possibility of starting their own business," explains Stephenson via email. "Erinoak did this because once many of their clients reached young adulthood, they couldn't find or keep meaningful employment. "The idea for the Internet store could out of the process of exploring the possibilities of starting a business and pursuing entrepreneurial ideas." COARE was established as an indirect result of difficulties people with disabilities face when looking for work. The unemployment rate for peo ple with disabilities is 44%, dramatically higher than the 8% to 10% national average. In his opening remarks, Stephenson spoke about the launch of COARE and thanks its sup porters. "We couldn't have done any of this with out our families, friends, instructors, and the assis tance of The Enterprise Centre." COARE's other four members are: Diana D 'Agostino, office administration; Dulcinea Dos Santos, accounting; Jerrett Bennink, administra tion; and Jason Denham, shipping and promotion.
