Little did she realize then that this festive season she would have the best seat in the house, at least from the perspective o f a budding young ballerina. Eleven-year-old Samantha, a student at the National Ballet School in Toronto, portrays Maria, the sweet young heroine of the story who embarks on an enchanting adventure. N eedless to say, Sam antha was "excited" upon learning of her good fortune, hand-picked by the com pany's artistic director himself, James Kudelka, from a short list o f six. As a student in residence, she I had to wait the entire day before contacting her parents in Oakyille, M ichael and Lesley, with the good news. Rehearsals have been endless since O ctober and academ ics have been put on the back burner until the final curtain call at the end o f this m onth. (In total, Samantha will dance in nine of the 24 shows, sharing the lead with two other M arias) Sam antha loves the entire experience, the acting as well as dancing involved, not to mention "dancing with the best o f the best." "We're very excited and very proud," said dad M ichael. "One of us will go to every single show, both o f us quite often." Samantha is gaining insight into the behind the scenes aspects of live theatre. The Stevensons, who drove their daughter to and from school until this year, are trying to cope with her absence. "It's particularly hard on mother," said Michael. "But we see her every Wednesday, every weekend and we talk to her every day. It's such a wonderful experi ence. And they are watching their daughter - the Stevensons also have a 19-year-old son Jonathan grow up and gain confidence, and Samantha couldn't be happi er. "It's fun being with all my friends," she says. Because of her long, hectic days at the National Ballet School, Sam antha has had to forgo her classes at Dance Magic where she studied ballet, jazz, tap and acrobatic dance. She was introduced to dance at the age of four though the Oakville parks and recreation department, just to see if she'd enjoy it.
