Wednesdsay December 15, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER J> A3 House builder finds wine a good investment Val Bezic sells 1900 bottle for $10,300 via internet Oakville homebuilder, Val Bezic, made his first sale via the Internet last week and now he's hoping the web can sell some of his new homes too. His first Internet sale w asn't a house. It was a bottle of wine. It wasn't a run-of-the-mill bottle of wine. The single bottle sold for $10,300. There is no `vin ordinaire' in the wine cellar at Bezic's large home backing onto Glen Abbey G olf Course. Bezic's bottle of Lafitte-Rothschild, a Bordeaux Rouge bottled in 1900, sold in a bi-weekly auction at www.winebid.com. "I was a little disappointed in the price. I thought it would have gone higher, but still I did all right. I bought the bottle for less than $2,000 in 1982 and decided to hang on to it until the end o f the century. I knew somebody would want to start the new century with a bottle of wine that started the old century," said Bezic. The winning bid came from California. And now that he has experienced the capabilities of the web, Bezic has opened a web page for his home-build ing firm Glen Orchard Homes. Building the website has taken him as long as building one of his exclusive custom-built homes, which are wellknown in Oakville. But that's because Bezic says he applied the same meticu lous detail to his web design as he does for his home designs. Bezic started his extensive wine col lection in 1972, when he was travelling the world with his sister, Sandra, as world-class pairs figure skaters. Sandra and Val Bezic were Canada's pairs champions for five years and Olympic medal hopefuls in 1972 until a serious injury to Sandra ended their competition careers. Sandra went on to become one of the world's foremost skating choreog raphers and producer of the Stars On Ice tour of the world's top skaters. Val returned to Toronto and went to work with his father, Dick, who has been building homes in Toronto's westend since 1954. The first bottle of wine he bought as a keeper is an 1863 Malmsey Madeira Solera from Portugal. He paid $18 for it in 1972 and it is valued on the wine auction web today at $200. -Torstar network Val Bezic and wife Pam, toast their good taste in hanging on to 1900 bottle of LafitteRothschild. Most people forget that alcohol is a drug that can impair thinking and deci sion-making, thereby putting individuals at risk of injury or even death. When alcohol is used wisely and in moderation, however, it can have few associated risks. To help ensure the safe and appropriate use of alcohol and reduce risk, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health has established some low-risk drinking guidelines: - no more than two standard drinks on any day with a weekly intake limit of 14 or fewer standard drinks for men and nine or fewer standard drinks for women. - a standard drink is defined as 12 ounces of regular strength beer (5% alcohol); five ounces of wine (12% alco hol) 1.5 ounces of spirits (40% alcohol) such as rum, rye or vodka. - drink slowly to avoid intoxication. Wait at least one hour between drinks and alternate alcoholic and non-alco holic beverages. The Health Department is also reminding residents of several myths regarding the consumption of alcohol: - eating before drinking will not pre vent you from getting "as drunk". Actually, 100% of the alcohol consumed is absorbed into the bloodstream regard less of what you eat. - coffee will not help to sober some one up. No amount of food or liquid will change alcohol's effects once in the blood. - hard liquor is not more intoxicating than beer or wine. net Torstar network photo M E R R I A M S c h o o l ( 9 0 3 ) o f M u s ic 8 2 9 - 2 0 2 0 2 3 5 9 B R IS T O L C IR C L E , O A K V IL L E ( o n W in s t o n C h u r c h ill. 1 lig h t S o u th o fD u n d a s ) G*LF CLEARANCE W A R E H O U S E FaHGottWs L a s t M in u te G o lf G u id e Fin New l5 w Price Accuspin Diamond Face Wedges Golf Shirts | Values to 90.00 52" 56' 6 0 * Alien Original Ultimate Wedge \ Value 89.99 Value 129.00 $0099 $ 3 4 " ^ * 3 each Don't Pay More Copper Face & Balata Face I New Golf Ballsl Assorted Styles Putters Travel Covers Assorted Styles DeluxfPadded C r o B 'P a t e O rg a n izer S tan d Bag Value 179.99 Assorted Colours S1fi | Value to 50 .0 0 |9 9 1 1 /alue to 100.00 $2 9 Mto*69M H w y .7 Q E W 1 i 1 M is s is s a u g a w y .4 0 7 _ H S teeles S pa* rsR d .
