"It was a close game, very similar to our meeting in the regular season," said coach Brian Delaney. "We were able to move the ball on the ground fairly well. That's how we played the last game (against White Oaks). "We're basically a running team." Leading the charge was Mike Kalata who rushed in two of the White Oaks touchdowns. "He's been our main ball carrier all year long," said coach Delaney. "He usually runs for over 100 yards a game." Coach Delaney added, however, the team has "three excellent running backs", the other two being Jordan Vechsler, who scored the other touchdown, and Craig Henderson who did a great job blocking. ' He also paid tribute to a trio of players who went both ways -- Geoff Browne and Sky Speers on the offensive and defensive lines and Mike Kucan playing offensive and defensive end. With their powerful running gaftie, White Oaks was slowly able to turn the tide, inching ahead 7-0 at the half and then adding majors in the third and fourth quarters before Iroquois Ridge got on the board on a pass from Q.B. Ben Nease to Shayan Mirza. With the game being so close, White Oaks left their bag of trick plays unopened. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Once they gained the lead, they were content to concentrate on "ball control", patiently running the ball and "using up the clock as much as we could." Iroquois Ridge head coach Mike Luyks concurred. "We just didn't have the ball long enough to do much. They really controlled the ball with their running game, and we didn't do the job of tackling that we had planned on doing, and that was it. "The whole week we practiced we said we have to tackle and we just didn't do it." He also paid tribute to White Oaks' Mike Kalata. "Mike Kalata, number 25, was the difference in the game. It's just that easy. Everyone I've talked to has said the same thing -- parents, other coaches. "If you take him off the team and put him on our team, we'll win." All in all, though, he said it was a good season for the Ridge who were only bested by one team -- White Oaks. "It's the first time Iroquois Ridge has ever made it there. We were very happy. You know we would have liked to have won but we didn't." His team did make a close game of it, and he acknowl edged his own team's efforts, in particular a couple of play ers. "Ed Fiore did a great job. He was our fullback and he carried the ball for a lot of the way. "And then Dan Partington did a great job, too. He's basi cally our leader in terms of just overall play. He's a real fire plug. He did a great job, too." The championship featured a neat off-field match-up involving the two head coaches. Delaney, who has been at White Oaks 27 years, used to coach Luyks who went to White Oaks as a youngster, play ing on both the junior and senior teams before moving on to McMaster where he was a back-up quarterback from 198791. What's more Luyks, now a fulltime teacher at Iroquois Ridge, was a supply teacher at White Oaks two years ago (moving on to Blakelock as a full time teacher last year) and was active as a coach, including the junior football team. Delaney said he was "very dedicated", well liked and respected at White Oaks which actually hoped he would have ended up teaching at his alma mater. "Ah, yeah, that was great," acknowledged Luyks. "It was earlier in the year when I said to the boys, I've never lost to White Oaks in my life, because I'd never played them, and they clued into that." "It was exciting for myself -- and a lot of the White Oaks players. They found it easy to get up for me because two years ago they were grade nines and they didn't play a second, because, you know, they're grade nines, and so they were easy to get motivated because, you know, here's the coach that didn't play us." White Oaks, this year, did not have a senior team, and the silver lining for coach Delaney was that he had a huge sixman coaching staff including four White Oaks teachers and two community coaches. "It was great. I had an offensive coordinator (Roman Kalata), a defensive coordinator (Ken Batemen). We were able to work with individuals, work with small groups." In his 27 years at White Oaks, he said he had never O a k v ille . t A s e d C a r TO RUN O N TH IS P A O E C A LL N O W ! 1994 MERCURY TOPAZ LS l owner, 3.W.
