- The Oakville Public Library first began in 1836 when William Tassie established a public reading room in the town’s meeting hall.
In 1853, the Mechanics’ Institute took over the village library, offering a wider variety of book topics to the Oakville community.
The Institute then merged with the Oakville Common School library in 1862, moving the collection to the school tower.
The name ‘Oakville Public Library’ came into official use in 1895 after an amendment to the 1882 Provincial Free Libraries Act, and a catalogue of the entire collection was printed shortly after.
The 20th century saw much growth and change for the library including several location changes until the construction of its permanent home at 120 Navy Street in 1967, a ‘Bookmobile’ service in 1958, and the introduction of a computerized circulation system in 1989, the first library to do so in Ontario.
The Library has always strived for innovation, even having introduced the concept of integrating school and public library services with the opening of the White Oaks branch.
The past fifty years has seen the library grow from one Central location to six branches servicing various areas throughout Oakville.
The Oakville Public Library continues to be a valued member of the Oakville community and provides a place of learning, engagement and constant encouragement for all those who visit.
