- The Palermo United Church, located on Dundas Street, Oakville, was founded in 1812 by Lawrence Hagar, one of Palermo’s original settlers
Initially a Methodist meeting in Hagar’s home, Palermo’s congregation grew and eventually decided it was time for a permanent home.
The building was erected in 1867 and has not changed much since with the exception of an added stage and building addition in the early 1980s
Although now surrounded by an urban community, Palermo’s foundations were largely rural and agricultural, the church having once been surrounded by farms
The original church building was also one of just a handful of buildings located within the village
The church still uses well water and the stained glass windows that have been installed over its history have never been broken
Recently, Palermo United Church celebrated its 150th anniversary of the building, with its congregational foundations over 200 years old. - Publisher
