www.insidehalton.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, August 10, 2017 | 1 8 Help bring Brookies to Bronte Creek MOHA is now the Oakville Rangers Hockey Club - where everyone is a Ranger. Conservation Halton (CH) wants to bring back brook trout to Bronte Creek through a new initiative called Brookies to Bronte Forever. Brookies to Bronte Forever! is a multi-phased project aimed at protecting, sustaining and enhancing brook trout habitat in the Bronte Creek valley through education, awareness and habitat rehabilitation. The goal is to sustain and restore populations through education and empowerment of private landowners. Brook trout are a cold-water species of fish indigenous to Bronte Creek. They flourish in steady flowing, cold-water streams with gravel bottoms and plenty of shade. According to Conservation Halton, recent monitoring suggests that brook trout populations are in decline in the Bronte Creek region and throughout southern Ontario. Conservation Halton is hoping to reverse this trend. There are two primary focuses in the first phase of the project -- Buffers for Brookies and barrier mitigation. Buffers for Brookies has Conservation Halton staff reaching out to landowners interested in enhancing Bronte Creek by planting native trees, shrubs and herbaceous (woody) vegetation adjacent to the bank. This will provide brook trout with shade and reduce stream temperature, according to Conservation Halton. The vegetation will also attract insects and other wildlife that Brook Trout rely on for food, as well as provide bank stability and reduce erosion. BROOKIES IN BRONTE FO R E V ER Conservation Halton says funding up to 100 per cent of eligible buffer project costs will be covered, up to a maximum of $5,000, subject to availability. Additional funding may be available through government and/or not-for-profit organizations. Barrier mitigation seeks out opportunities to enhance aquatic passage by reducing and removing obstacles for brook trout. Removing barriers to fish passage can allow brook trout to return to habitat that may presently be impossible to navigate or re-inhabit. This may include: pond decommissioning, culvert repair/replacement and dam/barrier removal.
