According to the HLF Executive D i rector Lesley M ansfield, the majority of students w ho receive support com e from a family where one or both parents are working. "The high cost of housing in Halton, low -paid w ork and unexpected events like illness or accidents can affect a fam ily's incom e to the point where they can no longer afford to buy their children new shoes or send them on a school trip," M ansfield said in a press release. "We don't w ant kids in our com m u nity to give up on their education and the opportunity for a better future be cause they are unable to fully participate in sch ool," said Mansfield. Even a sm all donation can make a dif ference, according to Mansfield. All it takes for a student to be included in a class field trip is $20. Every year, HLF provides em ergency funds for clothing, lunches and other basic necessities to over 1,000 students in the Halton District School Board.
