The area manager of First Student Canada-- part of the United Kingdom-based FirstGroup transportation company -- says they anticipate being in serious need of more bus drivers in Halton, particularly in the south, so they have to make the job more attractive. "The shortages are isolated to Oakville and Burlington. That's where it's acute. In Georgetown w e have ample drivers. Toronto had issues last year with driver numbers. It's not just us, it's the whole industry," said Peter McGlynn. First Student also has bus drop-off and pick up satellite sites in Oakville, Burlington and Georgetown. McGlynn couldn't pinpoint how many drivers they are short or how many routes for the 2017-18 school year are not filled. "The drivers come in to pick their routes in a few weeks so w e are unsure of how many (routes) will be open until that process has been completed. We do anticipate that w e will have open routes," he said. "It is difficult providing a num ber.... That is why we are totally focusing on recruitment and training." In Halton, First Student (formerly called Laidlaw), along with Attridge, Stock and several other service providers, transport tens of thousands of students to and from schools each year.
