www.insidehalton.com |OAKVILLE BEAVER |Thursday, August 24, 2017 |10 Vandalism continued last week as paddles stolen, destroyed continued from p.7 The bag destroyed the boat's canopy. Cull estimates the damage to the boat to be somewhere in the area of $1,500. He said the vandals also grabbed a few construction cones from the nearby Rebecca Street bridge reconstruction area and set them on fire. One cone was placed inside the CharterAbility barbecue and torched, destroying both the cone and the barbecue. "It's a little scary," said Cull. "The arson is terrible. There is a lot of gas in some of these boats. If one blows up there could be a chain reaction and Lord knows what is going to happen then?" While Cull may be disturbed by the vandalism, he did not allow it to get in the way of his charity' s work. The CharterAbility boat took to the water with a group of clients Friday despite having no canopy. CharterAbility is a registered charity dedicated to providing accessible, recreational, boating at no cost to people of all ages who are deprived of the opportunity by virtue of their physical limitations or personal circumstances. "We are committed to improving the lives of persons with disabilities and the disadvantaged by enabling them to spend time on the water, in safety and with dignity, relaxing in the company of their friends, families, and companions," said Cull on the CharterAbility website. The Oakville Harbour area, near the Rebecca Street bridge, has experienced an apparent spike in vandalism in recent days. At some point during the Wednesday (Aug. 16) evening hours, more construction cones were set on fire. Cull also said that after vandals urinated inside a large double-hull canoe in the area, they untied it from its moorings and left it to drift on the Sixteen Mile Creek. Fortunately it did not float too far away before it was discovered. "That boat is worth $100,000 and if it had floated down and smashed into another boat that could have caused some real damage," said Cull. The vandalism continued last Thursday night (Aug. 17) with some paddles being taken from vessels in the area and destroyed. Halton police are investigating these incidents. Anyone with information is invited to contact Crime Stoppers of Halton at 1-800 222-TIPS (8477).
