Sunday July 16, 2000 Oakville Beaver Weekend `Moshing' not for everyone Summer weather and live music go hand in hand. The lucky girl that I am, I've been to two shows already this summer. I've always gone to concerts to see the bands I love, but lately the crowds have been drawing my atten tion. This all started at Oakville's own Waterfront Stephanie Festival, with MacLellan the notorious Mosh Pit at Moist. In my opinion, those two phras es don't even belong together. For those unfamiliar with the band, Moist does play several hard-driving songs, but most of their repertoire consists of well-written, melodious music (as opposed to the pounding beats and riffs held together by a few tunes that usual ly prompt moshing). But I came home from this performance of music with cuts on my elbow, when a mosh pit broke out near me. "Moshing" is essentially slamming your body with force against other peo ple who are doing the same, in varying degrees of violence. This can bring a sense of community, but it often draws people who are looking to take out their repressed anger on strangers -- physi cally. I've never understood what this has to do with the music. From what I can make of it, it's not so much a reaction to the music as what the participants enjoy doing at the shows. Personally, I don't enjoy being shoved from all directions and slamming myself against people, but that's just me. So while it's not my thing, and I still don't get what it was doing at a Moist show, I don't have a problem with moshing in itself. It's fine, as long as it doesn't involve people who don't want to be involved, who just want to appreciate the music. Then again, there are those who take appreciating music to the other extreme. These are the people who plant their feet and stare at the stage during a concert, maybe swaying a lit tle if the band plays an upbeat number. Yes, the music is terrific, but if that's all you want from a concert you might as well stay home and listen to a CD. The whole experience of a live show is to feed off the band's energy, and give your own energy back to the band.
