A Topsy Turvy' G&S production The Oakville Choral Society (OCS) is `Topsy Turvy" with having to learn staging and dancing for its upcoming Gilbert and Sullivan (G&S) presentation, says music direc tor Bev J. Stainton. The OCS will present favourite solos and choruses from a number of G&S productions including The Pirates o f Penzance, HMS Pinafore, The Mikado, and The Gondoliers in its Spring into Song concert on Friday, May 5th and Sat urday, May 6th at 8 p.m. in the Oakville Centre for the Per forming Arts. Michael Burgess will narrate the production. No, not the Canadian singer who is best known for his role as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. It's another Burgess, a pastor, who, Stainton says, is a celebrity in his own right. Referring to a line from Kiss Me Kate that talks about "the army, the church, and the stage," Stainton says this particular Burgess has done all three. "He was in the army, then he went to the stage and was with The D'Oyly Carte Company for ten years," says Stain ton, adding that during those 10 years Burgess cleaned out a storage room only to discover an original score of Richard D'Oyly Carte's that had been missing for 30 years. "It has since been published." Stainton says the choral society's G&B production has finally come together thanks to the efforts of choreograph er Jennifer Garde and the production's four guest soloists: contralto Corinne Lynch, tenor Bernie Lynch, soprano Deb orah Overes, and bass Peter Wiens. "Bernie and Corinne are a couple. I guess they've sung every single conceivable role, because they were with the for mer, now-defunct Gilbert and Sullivan Society for 30 years," says Stainton, explaining that he called them in to help him rehearse the leads. `They know the stuff inside-out and back wards. . .1 didn't have to choreograph it or anything." Overes and Wiens, who are members of the Canadian Opera Company (COC), have helped with choreography and other "stage business." As for Garde, she choreographed an inexperienced cho rus in dance numbers that, with her help, have become "interesting but not complicated," says Stainton. Another "interesting," but possibly complicated moment in the production involves a scene from the Pirates o f Pen zance in which the police and the villains happen to be the same chorus members. `T he police come to rescue the maidens and nail the pirates. And, of course, two minutes ago all the policeman were pirates," he explains. "In the wings they're going to have to peel off whatever they've worn for pirates in very short order and become policemen and march on." The elaborate costumes needed for these G&S scenes, says Stainton, were handmade by the choristers or brought in from their homes. He says the OCS couldn't afford to hire anyone to make the costumes and there certainly was n't enough money in their kitty to rent them. `T hey've done a lot of work and they've had a lot of fun," he says, adding that the police officer's helmets would have cost $15 each, per night, to rent. So, some were borrowed from North Toronto Players and others were pur chased from a party supplier. And to top everything off for this production, John Gar rett, who designs sets for professional theatre companies, offered to paint a backdrop for the OCS at no charge. So, he painted a 20-foot by 15-foot canvas, which includes the English sea. "It's a sea scene with a horizon and a little ship in the background, which we will blot out with another piece of set for the gondola and for the pirate ships.. .so that we're on shore," says Stainton. Tickets for the OCS Spring into Song production are $15 and are available by calling 845-5359, 847-7469 or the Oakville Centre box office at 815-2021.
