Police said they have begun to receive calls from people who have been contacted by fraudsters claiming to be employees of the Town of Oakville. Using that authority the individual attempts to set up an appointment to visit the resident' s home so they can inspect their gas and water pipes or water or gas meters. The Town of Oakville says they are not be hind these phone calls. One Arichat Road resident said she was contacted by phone on Tuesday (Aug. 2 2 ) by someone claiming to be with the Town who said they would actually be coming Thursday to examine the gas and water pipes. The woman, who asked to remain anony mous, told them not to come and then con tacted the Town and police. "I picked up on it right away," she said. "But strangers are calling people and po tentially some little old lady might fall for this and open her door to these con-artists." Det. Mark Underwood of the Halton Re gional Police Service Fraud Unit said it is unclear exactly what these scammers are at tempting to accomplish, but he suspects it is a misleading marketing ploy.
