G roups encouraged to apply for this new ly e sta b lish e d S pecial Projects Fund include any that are interested in c reatin g p ro -activ e, innovative program s for youth that involve a partnership o f more than one organization from the public, private or com m unity sectors. All related o rg an izatio n s are invited to subm it their proposals not ju st United Way funded agen cies. The Special Projects Fund w a s ' initiated after gaps were identified in a num ber o f areas pertaining to young people, aged 10 to 18. "This new initiative is important for our grow ing population. The challenge o f UW O is to continually strive to m ake a difference in peo p le's lives for the better. And with the Special P rojects Fund, we believe that we can make a differ ence by creating trem endous pro gram s for our youth." Proposals should address the fol lowing criteria: * Program is preventive in nature. * A ddresses issues faced by youth. * Program involves collaborative partnerships (two or more groups). * Serves the O akville community. * Program is operational in the year 2000. * Program utilizes volunteers. * Lead partner is a registered Canadian charity, with a volunteer board of directors. * Outlines how the project will sustain itself beyond the funding period. The allocated funding is for one year. The deadline for subm issions is Jan. 31st, with the announcem ent of winning proposals on M arch 30th. Program and capital requests will be accepted. The follow ing areas are not eligi ble for funding: * M edical research. * M andated governm ent services. * Individuals, religious or politi cal activities. * Debt retirem ent or deficit fund ing. A special allocations com m ittee will be established for the Special Projects Fund and will consist o f youth from the com m unity as well as individuals who work both directly and indirectly with youth.
