She's a mother of two young children and works outside the home as a full-time director of communications and market ing at Appleby College. "I get home from work around five, make dinner, and before you know it it's bath time, and then time for stories and bed," said Hamilton. Quality time playing with her daughter Chloe, age three, and son David, eight months, is a top priority. A board member and pro gram user of the Oakville Parent-Child Centre, Hamilton is participating in "Come Play With Me," an interactive play program for parents and preschool children on Saturday mornings. Hamilton and her daughter Chloe enjoy a morning of free play, arts and crafts, song circle and snack together, along with a group of preschoolers and their parents at the Oakville Parent-Child Centre. "It's a great opportunity for parents who work outside the home, mothers or fathers," said Hamilton. "I get to focus on my daughter by playing with her." She and Chloe leam songs to sing and crafts to do at home, and also benefit from interact ing and socializing with a small group of preschool children and parents. "Knowing how to play and stimulate little minds is a valu able skill," said Hamilton. According to Hamilton, there aren't many weekend pro grams in the area that involve parent and child participating together. Jill Snidal, executive direc tor of the Oakville ParentChild Centre agrees. She said Saturday's "Come Play With Me" was developed specifical ly at the request of working parents, including Hamilton. "On weekends there are lots of fitness-oriented programs available, but no interactive programs," said Snidal. "Interactive programs general ly target stay at home parents and home care providers, so marketing to working parents is new for us." Snidal admitted getting the word out to working parents has been a little tricky, but the program is catching on and will again be offered in January. She explained the goal of this interactive program, based on play, is to provide a special time for parents and children to bond, and really sit and attach with one another. It under scores the importance of play in early childhood development. It also helps parents gain Photo by Peter C. "Parents can leam action songs, for example, that can be used for fun at home, and are also especially useful in stress ful situations," said Snidal. Parents also leam about the ages and stages kids go through from exposure to other children and parents. And group interac tion is important in forming networking opportunities in the community for friendship and support. "It's great to focus on each other for an hour and a half, and when David is old enough I'll take him too," said Hamilton. "Come Play With Me" is in it's first eight week session at the Oakville Parent Child Centre located at 337 KenStreet. The program will run again in the New Year begin ning on Jan. 22nd.
