This is an opportunity to study abroad for a semester or full school year. Recipients of these scholarships are respon sible for paying only their airfare and personal spending money. All other expenses, such as medical insurance, school, program and transfer fees, and full room and board are covered by the scholarship. Nacel Canada is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting international understanding and language educa tion. Its origins date back to 1957, when two language teach ers from England and France began organizing summer courses in England for French students. The goal was to pro vide an opportunity to extend language learning and knowl edge of another culture through well-organized and afford able programs. The programs grew rapidly and spread to other countries in Europe and to North America. Today, almost 1,000 Canadian families host French, Spanish, German, Australian, Japanese, and Mexican students every year. Students may select France, Germany, Australia, Brazil, Spain or Mexico as their destination. A minimum of two years of study is required in the appro priate language, except in the case of Germany or Brazil, where there is no language requirement as students enter a language instruction program upon arrival. Students from 15 to 17 will be selected on the basis of their willingness to be open and ability to adapt to a new cul ture. Good grades and a positive attitude towards learning are also important. There will be a 15 full scholarships available for the 2000/01 school year. Initial applications must be received by Dec. 1st. Students can ask their high school counsellor or language teacher for more information or call the local Nacel representative today, Shirley Cairns at 844-4392 or 1-800-665-6223, co-ordinator for Peel/Halton. "This is a wonderful opportunity for young people to experience another culture and learn a foreign language. The young people grow up so much during their stay abroad and come back so full of confidence and with so many great memories," says Cairns. The name Nacel comes from the French word nacelle, the basket under a hot air balloon. It symbolizes travel and adventure. Its website is at www.nacel.org M o re v a lu e fo r y o u r m o n e y o n a c r u is e v a c a tio n INSURANCE A MUST! AN INCREASING NUMBER OF CANADIANS ARE PURCHASING TRAVEL HEALTH INSURANCE when making their vacation plans. Yet close to 3 million Canadians are prepared to risk their financial well-being instead of spending the few dollars on insurance that they would need to protect themselves. That was the major finding in a recent survey conducted by the Conference Board of Canada. The greatest risk takers are Canadians between the ages of 18 and 25. The cost of insurance premiums shouldn't be an obstacle for most travellers. Someone under the age of 30 can obtain insurance for a little over $1 a day, while a senior can be covered for about $3.25 per day. By comparison, a one-week stay in a U.S. hospital can cost more than $10,000, and the health portion of a travel health insurance premium for out-of-country coverage is tax deductible. An estimated 480,000 Snowbirds (Canadians aged 55 and over, who spend 31 consecutive days or more outside the country) will head south this year, with more of them than ever before covered by a travel health insurance plan.
