A freshman, Krishnamurthy captured the women's singles title Tuesday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's East Region Championships at Harvard University. The O.T. grad beat Jessica Arthur of William & Mary 6-4, 6-4 to claim the title. By virtue of reaching the final, Krishnamurthy earned a spot in the 2000 Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the third leg of the ITA Grand Slam Feb. 3-6 in Dallas. Fourth seeded Krishnamurthy upset No. 2 seed Martina Nedelkova of Virginia Commonwealth 6-2, 6-2. Nedelkova is No. 25 in the ITA rankings and was ranked as high as No. 2 last season. All told, Krishnamurthy won six matches in three days to claim the title. She did not lose a set the entire tourney and is on a 16-match winning streak. Krishnamurthy has quickly established herself as one of the top newcomers. She went 20-1 during the fall and regis tered wins over three players in the ITA top 50. Last month she guided Princeton to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) team tournament title. Krishnamurthy became only the second Princeton player to win the regional singles title and third ever to reach the final in the tournament's 17-year history. She's also the first player from the Ivy League to capture the regional title since Harvard's Erika deLonein `91. The four-day tournament featured the top women players from eastern U.S- colleges and universities, all ITA member institutions. The regional tourney was one of eight taking place across the U.S. during the month of November.
