38 Sunday, November 14, 1999 Oakville Beaver Weekend Important golf tourney on tap Recent cold temperatures may have brought another foreshadow o f the winter ahead. But there's still one important golf tournament left to played. And they don't care what the weather is. Yes, the annual Jam es Freill M emorial Boxing Day G olf Tournament, now in its sixth year, has played in all kinds o f weather over the years, from balmy spring and fall conditions to snow storms. Through it all they've managed to have a lot of fun while at the same time raising money for the Good Shepherd Centre o f Toronto and Hamilton. The first 88 golfers are accepted, and last year it was sold out by Dec. 4. The fee is only $49 or $29 for just the dinner. The shot gun start on Boxing Day (Sunday, Dec. 26) commences at 10:30 a.m. at Richview G olf and Country Club. More than $40,000 has now been raised in the past five years. For more information, call Kirk Boyd at 849-5618 or Peter Freill at (416) 594-8492. International exhibition series The Oakville Rangers novice AAA rep team had a pair of exhibition games in Rochester, New York, Nov. 5th/6th, winning 2-0 and drawing 1-1 respectively. As the scores would suggest, the contests were closely fought, with the Rangers goal tending tandem of David Clement and Peter DiSalvo being the difference. In game one, both goals were scored in the second period --Anthony Scalia from Cam Watts and Patrick Marsh, and an unassisted tally by Brian Urquhart. After that, Clement went to work stopping a breakaway one minute from the end of the middle frame, and robbing Rochester of two labeled markers in the third. The heroics must have been infectious as DiSalvo repeated the fine play in the rematch. Oakville's lone goal in that contest came on a one-timer by Scalia on a feed from Watts by the boards before Rochester potted its single tally in six periods. The Rangers' netminders must relish close encounters as witnessed by DiSalvo repeating third-period game savers. Stay tuned for an Oakville rematch. Sports Notes M ercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania keeps rolling along in NCAA first division play with a pair of weekend come-from-behind wins. Hiscock and McDonald each have a goal and two assists in seven games. Drum roll please. Week one of the national college basketball rankings are in, and the Sheridan Bruins, the two-time defending provincial cham pions and national bronze medalists, ring in a t ... number six. Actually, they are not even the top ranked Ontario team, at this point, with rivals Humber at 3rd and Algonquin at 2nd. The Bruins are led by Shane Bascoe, last year's college player of the year run ner-up and an invitee to Canada's national team training camp, which was quite an honour. The Bruins are also the lone college team to receive an invite to this weekend's Naismith basketball tourney at Waterloo, attracting some top U.S. and Canadian university teams. Sheridan's m en's and women's vol leyball teams are not ranked national ly. Win over Brampton stops slide The Oakville Rangers Novice AA hockey team dropped a couple of games to league leading Orangeville, then promptly bounced back with a victory against Brampton. The Orangeville series started in Oakville on Oct. 17th. Oakville came out slowly, finding themselves down 3-0 by the middle of the 2nd period. However, they finished strong, with Grant Kozlik scoring late in the 3rd period. On Oct. 23rd, Oakville travelled to Orangeville and after giving up a goal in the 3rd minute of play, played a spirited game. The Oakville defence (from goalie out) played hard, totally shutting down Orangeville's high-powered offence. This was an encouraging sign. The next day, Oakville hosted Brampton and again giving up a goal at the 4:45 minute mark, it was Oakville's defence that carried the play. Connor McMonagle tied the score late in the 1st period (assisted by Matthew Lorito and Danny Opratko) and Patrick Readshaw potted, the game winner early in the 2nd period (assisted by Jacob Legein and McMonagle). All players and parents of the team extend special thanks to those gracious Skate-A-Thon sponsors!
