Although results indicate that HCDSB students remain above the provincial average in the core subjects of reading, writing and mathematics, there were notable drops in each subject. In fact, in all areas tested, there was only one area where student results were actually up from the 2 0 1 5 /2 0 1 6 school year and that was in Grade 9 applied math. Last year, 55 per cent of Grade 9 students were at or exceeded the provincial average, and this year that number rose slightly to 5 7 per cent. Students who m et or exceeded the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) provincial average in Grade 3 reading dropped two per cent to 85 per cent; in writing, 8 4 per cent of students met or exceeded the provincial average compared to 91 per cent in 2 0 1 5 /2 0 1 6 and in Grade 3 math, the numbers were 75 per cent versus 79 per cent the previous year. The decrease in overall EQAO performance in Grade 6 was also noteworthy. Writing scores were down to 8 6 per cent of students meeting or exceeding the provincial average as compared to 9 2 per cent in the 2 0 1 5 /2 0 1 6 school year. Results in Grade 6 reading testing were down three per cent from last year at 8 7 per cent, and in math Grade 6 students fared as well as they did last year at 6 4 per cent. In 2 0 1 4 /2 0 1 5 that number was 7 4 per cent. At the high school level, Grade 9 academic math students scored lower in EQAO testing than they did during the previous school year with 85 per cent of students meeting or exceeding the provincial average as compared to 89 per cent. Results indicated a three per cent drop in the results of the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test results, from 86 per cent in 2015/2016, to 83 per cent in the 2016/2017 school year. "As a school district, we know that there is more work to be done. We consider a wide range of data, both at the district and school level, which includes the EQAO assessment, to identify student learning strengths and to target areas where more focused attention and resources are required," said Director of Education Paula Dawson. inside todays Beaver www.insideHALTON.com 6 35 36 Arts S ports Classified 37 39 43 S potlight Health B eaver Trails For home delivery & customer service call 905-631-6095, 5300 Harvester Rd., Burlington NEW suBscRIFTIONs call 905-631-6095 or subscribe online at www.oakvillebeaver.com A rrro wF u rn itu re, A sh leyF u rn itu re, B est B u y ,B rickM a ttress, C a n a d ia nT ire ,C u rren tP o w er M a ch in ery ,D eserres, F o o dB a sics, F o rtin o s, F resh C o , H o lla n dP a rkG a rd enG a llery ,H o m eD ep o t, H o m eH a rd w a re, H o m eO u tfitters, H u d so n 's B a yC o ., K itch enS tuffP lu s, L a stm a n 's B a dB o y ,L eo n 's F u rn itu re, L L v in gL ig h tin gO a k v ille ,L o n g o 's, L o w e's, M & M M ea tS h o p ,M a ritim eT ra v e l, M a rk 's W o rkW ea rh o u se, M cK esso n ,M etro ,M ich a el H ill, M ich a el's, M ississa u g a F lo o rin g ,N a tio n a lS p o rts, N oF rills ,P a rtS o u rce, P etV A lu , P h a rm a sa v e, P P G A rch C o a tin g s, P ro m o b izS o lu tio n s, R a b b a , R ea lC a n a d ia nS u p ersto re, R en 's Feedan dS u p p lies, R ex a ll P h a rm aP lu s, R o n a , S a lv a tio nA rm yR ecy clin g , Sears, S h o p p ers D ru gM a rt, S o b ey s, S ta p les, S ta te F a rm , T h eB rick ,T h eS o u rce, T h eT o ro n toS ta r, T o y sRU s, W a lm a rt D e n ie d In ju r e d ?
