That's according to Dr. Jeremy Butler who is lead psychiatrist at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital's (OTMH) Emergency Mental Health Service. Butler spoke at Understanding Teens in the Age of 13 Reasons Why, hosted by Halton Health care Wednesday, Sept. 20 at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). The free information session on adolescent mental health used the controversial series to facilitate a dialogue on teen mental health, self harm and suicide. It included a question-and-answer session with the audience. "I don't think this a film about mental illness. In some way, it overlaps with that, but it isn't. It's a portrayal of suicide, but I don't think mental health and psychiatry own suicide. I think 13 Reasons Why is a protest film," he told his audi ence. "It says, `I choose not to partake in this. I don't want to deal with bullying, sexual assaults and being ridiculed by my peers. I choose not to,'" said Butler. The psychiatrist's presentation included clips from the series, that was based on the 2007 nov el, as well as those from movies such as Dead Poets Society and The Breakfast Club. "This isn't a conversation that is new. This is the new form of it or this is the version of it for this generation," said Butler. The OTMH psychiatrist told the audience "being a teenager is about rebellion, it's about the sarcasm, the tearing down of things, re-evaluat ing and figuring out what your value structures are all about."
