The Bible was a special feature at the church' s Doors Open event on Saturday, Sept. 30. It can also be viewed two days in December during St. Andrew' s Christmas House Tour. The church is located at 41 Reynolds St. In 1998, Saint John' s Abbey and University commissioned renowned calligrapher Donald Jackson to produce a hand-written, handilluminated Bible. The Saint John' s Bible was created by Jackson, who is a senior scribe to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth' s Crown Office, along with other scribes and artists. This is the first illuminated, handwritten Bible of monumental size to be commissioned by a Benedictine monastery in more than 500 years. All 73 books from the Old and New Testaments using the New Revised Standard Version are presented in seven volumes of approximately 1,150 pages. The Saint John' s Bible was made using traditional materials such as vellum (calfskin), ancient inks, gold, silver leaf and platinum, and was written with quill pens fashioned St. Andrews Catholic Church is hosting a special exhibit of the Heritage Saint John's Bible as part of Doors Open Ontario.
