In the spirit of the Truth and R econciliation C om m ission's Calls to A ction, the friendship initiative between M acLachlan College and K aw enni:io/ Gaweni:yo began as a pen pal project, but quickly developed into a friend ship school partnership after visits between the schools took place. "As a school, we know that education and aware ness are essential to cre ating compassion and understanding," Lisa Duranleau, Executive Direc tor of MacLachlan College, said in a media release. "W e all saw the tre m endous opportunity to co n n ect our schools in a meaningful way so stu dents and teachers can m ake con nection s, share cultural experiences and learn from each oth er." Last spring, K a w e n n i:io /G a w e n i:y o hosted M acLachlan's Grade 5 students for a day that included dance, song, a game of lacrosse and a visit to a longhouse. To reciprocate, MacLachlan invited the Grade 6 students from K a w e n n i:io /G a w e n i:y o to attend an afternoon of Grade 9 students from Kawenni:io/Gaweni:yo present a song while Susan Aglukark (left) looks on. | submitted photo team -building games and floor hockey and invited them to per form at M acLachlan's w elcom e back barbecue event. A group of Grade 9 students from K aw enni:io/G aw eni:yo also attended to share and teach som e tradi tional song and dance with the M acLachlan Community. "This has been a re ally good experience for the kids. W e have seen som e of our shy students open right up and have a really good conversation with the students from MacL ach lan ," said Grade 9 Kaw enni:io/Gaw eni:yo teacher Joan n e Longboat. "I think it has been really enlightening for all of them -- our kids and M acLachlan's kids. M aking friends and hanging out together and sharing.
