Another reason, Duraiappah said, is that someone had to pioneer the new network and no one stepped forward to do that until now. "It' s a pretty bold step. A lot of agencies in the GTA know the value of having secure data communication, but it requires someone to go first," he said. "We have had a lot of success with innovation and technology and Motorola has considered us a valuable partner and an ideal partner to initiate this." Duraiappah said the need for an independent network is also getting greater noting that five years ago Halton police did not have in-car cameras or handheld mobile devices officers could use to write a report or photograph a crime scene. He also pointed out that other police services have other priorities and pressures. Duraiappah said Motorola is in the process of installing the infrastructure for this new wireless network in its new headquarters. The network is expected to be operational in mid-2018. He noted that through the leadership and support of Halton Police Chief Stephen Tanner and the Halton police board the network is expected to be operational in mid-2018. When it is up and running Halton police will manage the network in their new headquarters' state-of-the-art data centre. ^ All our frontline officers, their cruisers and their mobile devices will be run off our own wireless network. It is going to be dedicated to Halton first responders," said Duraiappah. "What we hope will happen is that other police agencies in Ontario and Canada, even the eastern seaboard, can use our core (network infrastructure) and link off of it and run their own private LTE network as well." When operational Halton officers will use the network to instantly access data on their computers or mobile devices such as dispatch information, records information, GPS data, maps, pictures, videos, and real-time analytics for day-to-day operations and during emergencies. "Halton police is known to be an innovator within public safety," said Bill Payne, manager of information technology, Halton police. "This new public safety LTE system is a major step forward in ensuring that Halton first responders have access to critical information when it is needed the most."
