As a result, the government is hampered in its ability to collect revenues that would fund much-needed social programs for all Canadi ans. As noted by the Canadians for Tax Fair ness advocacy group, the current tax system is providing benefits to a select few rather than funding programs that would benefit a wider pool of Canadians. Canada' s wealthiest citizens shouldn't have special means to avoid taxes that hard-work ing middle class Canadians can't access. This is why tax reform is imperative. Let me assure you that the federal govern ment will continue to be supportive of small businesses. Canada has the lowest small busi ness tax rate in the G7 and we are keeping it that way. There are hundreds of taxpayer funded programs, such as grants, loans, tax credits and wage subsidies, to help business owners achieve success. In addition, this week our Government announced that we are lowering the federal small business tax rate from 10.5 per cent to nine per cent. Lowering this tax rate without addressing tax planning strategies further increases tax advantages that benefit the wealthiest Canadi ans over the middle class. We want to make sure the rules are used to help businesses grow, not as tax strategies for very wealthy people to pay less tax. Every Canadian should feel confident that they have a real and fair chance at success. By putting middle class families first, our government' s move to improve tax fairness will do just that. -- John Oliver is proud to represent the riding of Oakville as its Member of Parliament.
