www.insidehalton.com |OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, October 20, 2017 |2 Catholic school drinking stations tested to date meet lead standards by Kathy Yanchus Metroland West Media Halton Catholic schools' drinking water sites tested for lead to date, comply with the Ministry of Education' s Safe Drinking Water Act requirements, according to board staff. Testing was undertaken between May and August of this year at about 65 per cent of board facilities, with the remainder to be tested next summer, said Ryan Merrick, senior administrator, Facility Management Services in a report to the board last month. New regulations which came into effect in July, 2017, state that every drinking water site in schools must be tested over the next three years, as opposed to one sample per school per year, said Merrick. The time line for testing completion is 2020 for elementary schools and 2022 for secondary schools. "We have about 802 drinking water locations across our 55 facilities and we've managed to test about 500 of them over the summer, so about 65 per cent completion. The ministry minimum was one-third and we hit almost two-thirds and now we're in good shape to finish all the testing this coming summer." ^ We are compliant and safe with the Safe Drinking Water Act and we're in really good shape to complete all drinking water testing for lead content next summer, a year ahead of the ministry guideline. y p Ryan Merrick senior adm inistrator, fa cilitym anagem ent services H a lto nC atholic D istrict School B oard A IR E O N E M A D N ESS S A LE ! Those schools were Bishop EE Reding Catholic Secondary School, Holy Rosary CES, St. Gabriel CES, St. Jospeph CES, St. Raphael CES and St. Ignatius of Loyola CSS. Locations where drinking water is in excess of standards -- greater than 10 micrograms/L of lead -- notices are sent to the Halton health department, the education ministry and the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change. Once remedial action is taken, further testing is conducted, said the report. "So with that, we are compliant and safe with the Safe Drinking Water Act and we're in really good shape to complete all drinking water testing for lead content next summer, a year ahead of the ministry guideline." School custodians are responsible for daily flushing and daily flushing logs which report the time and location of flushings, as part of the new regulations, he said. inside today's B eaver www.insideHALTON.com 6 20 S ports C las s ifie d 22 24 R ea lE sta te N ewH o m es CENTRAL AIR OR FURNACE DIAGNOSTIC SPECIAL www.
