O a k v i l l e R o t a r y A u c t i o n The Beer Store proud of recycling record The Beer Store has taken its recycling message to consumers as part of Waste Reduction Week. The week, sponsored by the Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO), acts as a reminder that most of what is purchased, can be recycled. "Everything The Beer Store sells, we take back: bottle caps, high-cone plastic neck rings, plastic bags and all of the dif ferent types of paper and cardboard," said Pat Bartholemew, President of The Beer Store. "Our goal is to recover 100% of our packaging. Today, almost 99% of bottles are recovered and reused 15-20 times." The Beer Store is a former recipient of the RCO's Chairman's Award for signifi cant overall achievement in the areas of waste reduction, reuse and recycling. `T he Beer Store is a model private-sector company and environmental leader," said John Hanson, Executive Director of the RCO. `T he company's province-wide bottle reuse program results in 500,000 tons of material being diverted from land fill sites annually." Bartholemew said that unlike all other consumer packaging, the beer industry and beer customers pay to operate this system. "The `closed loop' system for dealing with beer packaging means that municipal taxpayers do not have to pick up the cost of recovery for beer containers." "The Beer Store has been demonstrat ing its commitment to the environment since 1927 when we pioneered the first returnable bottle program," said Bartholemew. "We estimate that over the past 70 years, with the support of our customer^, The Beer Store has diverted about 70 billion beer bottles away from Ontario landfill sites-enough to stretch to the moon and back about 14 times."
