I Wednesday, November 3, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C3 Juno Award-winning gospel singer com es to Oakville Award-winning gospel singer/songwriter Steve Bell will be in concert at S t Jude's Church, 160 W illiam St. (at Thomas Street), on Friday (Nov. 5th) at 7:30 p.m. Bell won a Juno Award for Best Gospel Album for Romantics and Mystics in March 1998. The son of a Baptist prison chaplain, this Winnipeg-born tenor/acoustic gui tarist was voted by Billboard magazine as one of 10 Canadian artists most like ly to succeed internationally. (Billboard is the `bible' of the American-dominat ed music industry.) Bell's six albums have sold 150,000 copies, and a seventh, Steve Bell Band Live in Concert has recently been released. Tracks for this new CD were record ed on an 11-city Canadian tour this past spring. The recording artist says "he sings from the heart," drawing on personal experiences as well as on various musical influences from tribal rhythms to Latin guitars and Celtic harps. This Friday's concert is being sponsored by O akville's seven Anglican churches and is a fundraiser for the Anglican Church of the Incarnation, cur rently under construction in Glen Abbey. Fluids raised from the Oakville concert, plus donations from each church, will be presented to the Church o f the Incarnation at a post-concert reception. Sweets from each parish will be served at the reception along with wine, cheese, coffee and tea. Craft Fair at T he Ridge' on Saturday Blown glass ornaments, cement garden accents, intri cate angels, designer bears, delicious baked goods and hand-painted folk art will be among the variety of items for sale at the Iroquois Ridge High School Craft Fair on Sat urday (Nov. 6th). About 90 artisans, many of whom market their cre ations at major craft shows across Ontario, have purchased space at this Saturday's event. The Craft Fair will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at T h e Ridge,' 1123 Glenashton Dr., east of Eighth Line. The vocal and instrumental talents of the school musi cians will serenade shoppers as they roam among the craft booths in the cafeteria and `the street,' - an atrium style, main-floor hallway complete with antique style light stan dards that help create a streetscape running the full length of the school. And those wanting refreshments can visit the tea room. "Among the pot pourri of arts and crafts available for purchase are herbal oils and lamps, hand-crafted Santas, original quilted items and holiday arrangements to suit every room in the house," says show co-ordinator Sonja Ennis. New this year will be Monica Bullman's unique stained glass and fabric products, Hazel McConney's white choco late and cranberry creations, and the blown glass orna ments of Jeff Elsie and Sylvie Jensen. Liz Tupholm returns with her cement garden accents. "Every year the show enjoys more success," says Katie Ortolan, music teacher and Collaborative Music Council member. "We are quickly becoming a tradition in the Oakville area. "We're going to build on that success to enhance our music program. It's also a great way for our students to contribute to the community." The Collaborative Music Council, consisting of music students, their parents, and staff reflect the school's strong emphasis on encouraging life-long learning and education. Funds raised from the craft show will be used to pur chase more instruments to help relieve the present sharing situation. "It's also a useful life-skill lesson for students to learn how to improve their own environment through their own individual and collective efforts," adds Ortolan. The Craft Fair is co-ordinated annually by the school's music staff and students. Last year's event attracted a sell out crowd. "The staff and students involved in music add a stimu lating dimension to life at Iroquois Ridge High School," says principal Leona Woods. "This event gives the com munity a chance to see and hear them perform - and get some holiday shopping done at the same time."
