C4 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, November 3, 1999 Art show and sale this weekend Oakville's Johnny Filipchuk will be one of many artists who will be displaying and selling their work at Expressions in Art in St. Volodymyr Cultural Centre this weekend. The self-taught Filipchuk has been drawing and painting since he was a child, ultimately cre ating drawings, illustrations, paintings and prints. He works in pencil, ink, acrylic and oils, with stone lithographs and serigraphy being his favourite media. The meticulous workmanship, sense of real ism, and sensitivity that the award-winning artist injects into his wildlife paintings combine to ptoduce a strong and complex depiction of animal life. To create this spontaneous effect, minute detail and intimate expression, Filipchuk does the necessary background research before begin ning any of his original paintings. Traveling in Canada and the United States, he devotes many hours to watching and studying the habits of his subjects in their natural, surround ings. Expressions in Art will open with a wine and cheese reception and art preview from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in the Cultural Centre at 1280 Dundas St. W., on Friday (Nov. 5th). The subtitle, Not So Long Ago in the 20th Century... is a reminder that, although the stories of war seem to come from our past, there are still many individuals in the community with direct memories of war. These living memories can be a source of information for the younger genera tions to whom the concept of war seems so far removed. Opening one week before the final Remem brance Day of this century, the exhibit is timed to draw attention to this special day and encourage reflection on the history of the passing century and our choices for the future. Deborah Hudson, curator o f collections for the Oakville Museum, has worked closely with Oakville residents to ensure the exhibit has a community appeal. Hudson has collected dozens of photographs of Oakville residents actively involved in war efforts to include in the exhibit. "Oakville citizens contributed significantly to the war efforts in World War I and World War II," says Hudson. "And it is the impression of the collective memories of Oakville citizens, which I hope will be shared and passed on through the exhibit, especially to the younger generations." to have, m d t y h e id f $75 per person, tax receipt for $50 · · · · Air Canada Vacations Budds' Imported Cars Hunter M ultim edia Inc.
