Ronald McDonald House big winner at Meray Motors anniversary party M eray Motors celebrated its 40th year as a Mercedes-Benz deal ership and the arrival of its new 2000 lineup of vehicles, last Thursday , with a charity fundraising event accom panied by gourmet food, valet parking, a continuous laser light show and even three Toronto Maple Leafs. Billed as a Special Millennium Event, invited guests were ushered into "Planet Meray Motors' Special Effects Laser Time Tunnel" to view the MercedesBenz 2000 range of vehicles. And while Meray Motors president Bill Metcalfe was pleased with the recep tion the new vehicles received from the more than 400 people in attendance, he Trio o f M aple Leafs help raise $11,360 a t charity auction was beaming over the $11,360 the event raised for Ronald McDonald House. "It's nice to see the customers come out on a night like this and it's nice to see them be so generous," said Metcalfe. The money was raised through a silent and live auction of 26 items. The live portion of the auction fea tured seven items up for sale. Toronto Maple leaf Kris King, the Honourary Chair of Toronto's Ronald McDonald House, acted as auctioneer while team mates Yanic Perreault and Chris McAllister displayed the items up for sale and carried them through the audi ence. Metcalfe was impressed by the three Leafs and the effort they put into the evening. 'They worked the show for the charity and afterwards they continued mingling with the crowd and signing autographs," he said. This is the second year Meray Motors has combined its new model-year unveil ing with a charity fundraiser. Last year, the money went to the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Ronald McDonald House was chosen as the recipient this year, due largely to Metcalfe's friendship, with King, who hails from Bracebridge, Ontario where the Meray Motors president has a sum mer cottage. Metcalfe also sends both his children -- daughter Taylor Ann, 10, and son Spencer, 9, to King's summer hockey camp. Ronald McDonald House is a home away from home for out-of-town fami lies whose children are receiving treat ment for cancer and other major illnesses. The item which drew the highest bid ($2,500) was a limited edition print of Team Canada 72 which was autographed by every member of the team. Next in line was an autographed used racing helmet of Indy car driver Scott Goodyear which sold for $2,000. Other items of note included an auto graphed print of ballerina Karen Kain which went for $1,000 and a Mats Sundin Maple Leaf jersey autographed by the entire team for $600. Besides the new cars and the charity auction, those in attendance were treated to hors d'oeuvres from the Paridso Ristorante and Caz's Seafood, refresh ments, and music.
