THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, October 29, 1999 MADD Halton launches Red Ribbon Campaign Wednesday The official kick-off of the 1999 Red Ribbon Campaign by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Halton takes place Wednesday at the Glen Abbey Recreation and Aquatic Centre. The launch - to be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - will be an early reminder not to drink and drive during the holiday season, during which time infractions are especially prevalent. To get the word out, 2,000 volun teers will distribute red ribbons between Nov. 3rd and Jan. 2000 in local shop ping malls and grocery stores. The ribbons can be tied to vehicle antennas or outside rear view mirror to show that you support safe and sober dri ving all through the year. Red Ribbon coin boxes will also be distributed to many business locations to give people the opportunity to make a donation and take a ribbon. On hand at the launch will be mayor Ann Mulvale who will say a few words in sup port of MADD Halton and the invaluable work of its members. Also on hand will be offi cers from the OPP. Halton Regional Police will bring along the RIDE van donated by MADD Halton from the proceeds of last year's Red Ribbon Campaign. The statistics involving drunk dri ving are staggering: 4.5 Canadians are killed and more than 125 are injured daily in alcohol-related crashes. In addi tion, the direct and indirect costs of alcohol related crashes are estimated to be close to $8 billion annually. Approximately 40% of all traffic fatalities are alcohol related and it is estimated than one in eight drivers on weekends are impaired. More than 80,000 charges of impaired driving are laid each year.
