Pelley uses materials and techniques based on the work of the old masters, but it is not at all his intent to repeat their accomplishments. He paints, and keeps on painting on one work of art, continually changing it, elaborating and sub tracting, until the canvas is rich with pentimento and has a denseness o f character not unlike other structures that sur round him in his urban setting. Reference is an important part of Pelley's work - classi cal mythology, western art history, and apocryphal stories from world art history from the conceptual base of the paintings. He incorporates found objects into the work to help promote the narrative. These found objects, richly available in his Brooklyn, New York neighborhood, create a state of tension between the real and the painted. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Pelley studied at Syra cuse University and Arizona State University where he graduated Summa cum Laude. His exhibition in the gallery at 179 Lakeshore Rd. E. will continue until Nov. 11th.
