This latest MPV (short for MultiPurpose Vehicle) follows standard minivan convention with two rear slid ing doors and a third-row rear seat that flattens for maximum stowage or con verts into a picnic table. The new MPV can also be had with optional side-impact airbags. Available in three models - DX, LX and ES - the two second-row seats on the LX and ES can be moved forward or backward, as well as from side to side to form a single bench. The dual sliding rear doors are not power-operated, but can be ordered with power windows, which is a minivan first. They also require less effort to open or close than competitive designs. Only one power source is available in the MPV: a 2.5-litre DOHC 24-valve V6 borrowed from Mazda's 626 and luxu ry Millenia models that chums out 170 horsepower. A four-speed automatic transmis sion completes the drivetrain. All MPVs come with front air condition ing, four-speaker AM/FM/CD sound system and tilt steering. For example, tires under-inflated by only eight pounds can reduce gas mileage by five percent and cut tire life by 25 per cent or more. Cost-conscious motorists, should check tire inflation frequently. Checking tire inflation can easily be done with a personal tire gauge, gauges are available in most automotive stores for less than $10.00. Owners also should check tires for abnormal wear when vehicles are on lifts for service. More fuel is consumed as a result of incorrect alignment, which can result in at least a two percent tankful energy loss and reducing tire life. Incorrect alignment accelerates tire wear to an even greater degree. There are two easy ways to detect incorrect alignment of tire balance, indicat ing the need for cost saving wheel and front-end service: Looseness or excessive play in steering, or difficulty in controlling the vehicle over bumps and around curves are indica tions of problems which need cor recting. Another is vibration or the slightest shimmy. When vehicles are on the hoist, they should be checked for front end and steering looseness, and s h o c k absorber/strut leak age. If parts replacement is rec ommended, don't postpone it or take shortcuts in quality of parts, extent of service and cut-rate estimates. Insufficient ser vice to save a few dollars now can mean much higher future repair bills down the road.
