D6 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, October 27, 1999 Rangers win in Burlington and Brampton (Continued from page D5) OSC expects membership to hit 9,000 (Continued from page D1) Michigan who tied the game and then went one up on the Rangers. Detroit added an empty net goal in the dying seconds to put an end to Oakville's hopes for advancement. Kelly scored twice for Oakville (Bryan Carey, Jenkin and Martin collecting assists) and single markers went to Wheeler (from Badham and Murray) and Martin (from Kelly and Carey). Returning to league play, the Rangers made the short trip to Burlington on Oct. 13, defeating the Eagles 4-2 at Central Arena. A pair of goals each went to Dobrinsky (from Maganja 2 and Jenkin) and Murray (from Kelly 2, Carey and Badham). Still on the road, Oakville beat Brampton Battalion 6-2 at Memorial Arena on Oct. 19. Looking for their first win, the Battalion kept it close into the third peri od. The Rangers went up 3-0 after two periods on goals by Michael Galbraith (from Wheeler and Martin), Martin (from Davitsky and Wheeler) and Jenkin (from Dobrinsky and Martin). Brampton scored two quick goals in the third to get back in the game but the Rangers closed out the game with three unanswered goals -- Wheeler (from Martin), Davitsky (from Wheeler and Martin) and Shepley (from Wheeler and Martin). Air Athletics ran indoor programs last winter at the smaller dome and, now, this season have increased capacity by also moving into the big dome. It's been newly re-turfed and is now home to a mini-field and a full field (which can be split into two mini fields) and they were just brought on stream last week. Golfers need not worry that they're being pushed out, however. The indoor golf range is still operational all weekend (Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.) and every weekday, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The big dome, however, is available for local teams at all other times. And there has been lots of demand, even on week days when the field is only available before 8 a.m. and after 10 p.m. The youth soccer is handled through the Oakville Soccer Club, although Air Athletics has managed to accommodate some of the huge waiting list in a league. Air Athletics handles rentals for all other teams and leagues such as adult soccer for men and women and other sports. The OSC fall session is under way, running to Dec. 18th, with 850 kids registered for the winter session beginning after Christmas and winding up as the outdoor soccer sea son starts. In fact, to continually remind them of who they work for, the OSC -- North America's largest youth soccer club -- has added `For the Kids' under its logo this year. "It's just a gentle reminder that we're here for the kids," said Kovacs, a former professional soccer player, coach and director of operations for the semi-pro Puma International Soccer League (which has since amalgamated with the National Soccer League to form the Canadian Professional Soccer League). Timing is everything and the recent conversion of the ClubLink domes to indoor soccer fields, at a time when the OSC was desperate for access to more hours, couldn't have been more perfect. The kids had a taste of the indoor field last season "and enjoyed it so much." `T he community is obviously in love with the sport of soccer," said Kovacs. "With access to this superior facility it's made it very attractive for kids. There are lights, specta tor seats... The game is different. They play smaller groups and they change on the fly like in hockey. And there's the use of the boards." Watching a team of five-year-olds play on a recent Saturday, Kovacs said "it was a very noisy, exciting envi ronment." With such growth, it's an exciting time to be a part of the league, said Kovacs. "Soccer is my passion and my background is in business so it's a nice combination. I've thoroughly enjoyed the 10 weeks I've been here." Kovacs' major task is to put in place standard operating procedures, "make sure that everything has a form and a structure." Soliciting corporate sponsorships -- such as The Brick whose logo is emblazoned on the T-shirt of every indoor soccer participant -- marketing the club and supporting the volunteers and head coach Rick Morandini are all part of his job. One of the more innovative events launched this summer was an elite soccer school at Shell Park featuring guest instructor, Joep Haan, a youth development coach and for mer professional soccer player for Holland. Although the six-day clinic was open to rep players age 12 to 15 only, to a maximum of 60, any interested coaches and parents were welcome to watch. The hope is that the club will be able to duplicate the clinic for a lengthier time next summer and introduce many more to the world renowned Coerver Method, "the most used youth developmental training pro gram", of which Haan is a co-founder. The OSC is also gearing up for another summer season with close to 9,000 kids expected to enroll in the year 2000, said Kovacs. Those numbers are staggering but not impossi ble to manage, he added. "When circumstances allow, we will honor as many requests as we can but with numbers approaching 9,000, parents have to realize we will be inundated with requests." Kovacs emphasized that all involved are doing the best job possible. "One of the things I want to get across is that just because I have a background in the game, the parents, con venors, players, coaches have been in the program for years and we'd like to hear from them. And just because I'm here full time, the volunteers continue to be as important as ever." 4 6 7 SPEERS RD. (W OF D 0R V A L) How hypnosis helped me say... "So Long Size 16... Out of Control I was overweight my entire life. In my house junk food was everywhere. The shelves were lined with cookies, chips and snack cakes. I told myself the weight was in my genes. I was miserable about my weight. It broke my heart to be around those skinny girls. I felt like an outcast I found excuses to miss class. I dropped out. I was on an endless dieting roller coaster. One stupid diet after another. Take a little off. Put more back on. I starved on shakes. Gained weight with diet pills. Pain, suffering, misery. I went out less and less. I sat home, lonely and afraid. I looked at my family and saw no end in sighL Being overweight hurt. "When I was overweight no guy would look at me. I don't have that problem anymore!"
