Wednesday October 27, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A7 COMMENT T o m b s to n e e x c u r s io n w a s g r a v e a f f a i r It isn't easy to look unconcerned try ing to ram an eight-foot by four- foot piece of wood in the back seat of your car. But there I was in a lumber yard doing exactly what I had promised I'd do: return with the material for our homemade graveyard. Four weeks before Halloween, the kids had been in the bargaining mode. It went something like this: If we don't use those spider webs, can we make our own graveyard? Please? I have to tell you, I am not a good sport about Halloween - but am I alone in recoiling with horror from the flash- DIANE HART ing pumpkin lights the rest of the fami ly adores? And who really likes spider webs you find in your hedge....in July? And what is it with homemade crafts? My own homemade offering to the family, an orange jolly Happy Haunting plaque, was met with gales of laughter just because my painted bat looked like a space alien. So, I suppose, when it comes to this well-loved day for kids, I have to admit to being a bit of a Scrooge. But the kids were adamant: our house must be decorated. The relentless pleas went on until I finally succumbed. Okay, I said, as long as I don't have to pay a million dollars for tombstones or bones. Before you knew it, the draw ings were out, the plans were made: three tombstones made from wood, a gruesome sign pointing to the grave yard and some bones and skulls scat tered about. Mix a bit of black and white paint for some tombstone sayings and presto: a homemade graveyard. All we needed were materials and that's when they looked to me. I may not be able to meander about fancy dress stores with any authority, I admit it, but I can find bones and skulls with the best of them. Glow in the dark ones, I'll have you know. The wood, of course, was supposed to be the easiest part of it all. And cheap. They sent me over to the lumber store with one promise: you'll only have to pay $3 for a piece of cheap ply wood. Really. Once in the lumber store, of course, it was another story. "Now exactly what kind of wood do you want?" said one helpful fellow. Cheap, I said. He looked at me, aghast. "Really, just point me to the cheap est wood and I'll be fine," I said, wav ing an arm to what looked to me like about a billion pieces of wood. It all looked the same. Lousy wood, what did I care? Four men behind me shook their heads.
