Halton will receive $3.1 million over three years through the Ontario Ministry of Housing' s Home for Good Program. The money was secured by Halton Region through a competitive process, says Andrew Balahura, director of Housing Services and Chief Operating Officer, Halton Community Housing. Funding, and enhancements to it, was officially announced Friday, Oct. 20 during a press conference at the Halton Regional Centre. Approximately 40 regional staffers, Halton Region Chair Gary Carr and three local MPPs -- Ontario Labour Minister and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, Halton MPP Indira Naidoo-Harris, Minister of the Status of W omen and Minister Responsible for Early Years and Child Care, and Burlington MPP Eleanor McMahon. Home for Good benefits The Home for Good Program funding will help 20 households initially and enable Halton to build six new units. Apartment improvements Halton will also receive approximately $1.6 million for 20 1 7 /1 8 through the Social Housing Apartment Improvement Program (SHAIP). It' s part of an Ontario-wide allocation and Halton eyes receiving up to $ 8 .4 million over five years. Balahura said the SHAIP funding would be used for repairs and retrofits to social housing apartment buildings, including energy efficient lighting, boilers and insulating windows. Local reaction While Naidoo-Harris said, "We are building strong, healthy community together," McMahon stated, "Upgrading social housing in Burlington through energy retrofits, not only supports our government' s climate action goals, but also supports vulnerable tenants with their everyday costs."
