Friday, October 22, 1999 T H E O A K V IL L E B E A V E R 37 Deadline is approaching for Hall o f Fame nominations O akville's fledgling Sports Hall o f Fame kicked off at the begin ning o f the year with a big splash. A gala dinner in February ushered in a stel lar head table of inaugural inductees, all house hold names in most Oakville homes -- Donovan Bailey, Sandra Post, Vic Hadfield and M aria and Otto Jelinek. W hile the second annual gala din ner is still a ways away (the actual date has still to be set, probably in February), time is running out for Oakville residents to hand in their nominations. The Hall of Fame committee would like them before the end of the month. There can be up to five inductees (individuals or teams) in any given year. The criteria is pretty straight for ward, basically exemplary accom plishment by Oakville teams or indi viduals in the world o f sports. Although the inaugural inductees were all world-class athletes, there is also a builder category which recog nizes other contributions to sports, whether coaching, managing, owning, officiating, media, etc. The common thread, according to the Oakville Sports Hall of Fame's mandate, is that inductees "have brought pride and recognition to the town of Oakville." The Sports Hall of Fame's temporary quarters is expected to open in December at the River Oaks Rec Centre, and its permanent headquarters will be included in the scheduled expansion of the Glen Abbey Rec Centre. Oakville's Sports Hall of Fame, according to its mandate, "will serve as a site of homage for Oakville's outstanding athletes, builders and founders who have distinguished themselves through their contribution to sport." The final selection for induction is made by the Oakville Sports Hall of Fame committee. Nomination forms can be picked up at town hall. Respondents should include "a one page type-written biography of the inductee, their involvement, accomplishments, and/or contributions to sport. Please be specific." Completed forms should be dropped off to Frances McLellan, chair of the Oakville Sports Hall of Fame Committee, care of the town of Oakville's parks and rec department.
