The link between the amount of time that a child spends outside correlates with the quality of sleep a child receives, says Barber, and this defi nitely has an impact on a child' s ability to leam. Barber says the YMCAs curriculum also ties into the Ontario Ministry of Education' s report on 2 0 1 4 entided How Does Learning Happen? Antonietta Holmes, manager, Early Childhood Educator HCDSB, echoed support for the out door classrooms as a way to increase children' s creativity by adding many more different play zones for learning. The outdoor classrooms also help children transition to higher grades, Holmes added, and there is a lot of opportunity for collaboration be tween the older and younger children. "This is a partnership of resources," said St. Bernadette principal Juke Riesberry "These types of environments ready do aid in the development of children." "W h en our children are here, they transition (to older grades) seamlessly" Riesberry added. Halton Cathode District School Board has a long-term plan to convert all of its Kindergarten places into outdoor classrooms. As of September 2 0 1 6 , HCDSB installed 16 natural Kindergarten playgrounds. The second phase of the initiative began mid2 0 1 7 , with 13 schools receiving new playgrounds this summer. The rest of HCDSB' s kindergarten playgrounds are scheduled for completion by September of 2020. Artificial surfacing will be used to improve the maintenance and accessibility of the play struc tures, according to HCDSB. Minor modifications to several components wid also be made to im prove accessibidty. Y o u g e t ju s t o n e fu n e r a l. M a k e it t h e o n e y o u w a n t . You are unique.
