9 | Thursday November 9, 2017 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insidehalton.com Strike moves into its fourth week continued from p.3 Approximately 23,000 full-time and 18,500 continuing and part-time students in Oakville, Brampton and Mississauga have been unable to attend classes during the four-week strike. The colleges have also asked the Ontario Public Sector Employees Union (OPSEU) to suspend the strike and let students return to class while the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) organizes a vote. It remained unclear whether the union would agree to that request at press time (Nov 7). A statement from OPSEU's negotiator Monday urged college administrators to return to the bargaining table. "Rather than continue to bargain, the colleges have called a vote that, in itself, could easily keep faculty and students out of their classrooms for another two weeks," said JP ffornick, chair of union bargaining team. "Negotiation is the only way to go at this juncture," OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas added, in a media release. The colleges only have one opportunity to force a faculty vote. In the meantime, Sheridan College is advising its students the fall term may need to carry over to January 2018 and to refrain from making travel plans the week of Dec. 18 to 22. Depending on the length of the strike, Sheridan College says it may be possible that part of the fall term may need to carry over to January 2018, according to a media release.
