www.insidehalton.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 9, 2017 | 2 4 H alton police issue w arning about cou nterfeit cash here by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff Halton police are issuing a warning to local merchants following a recent surge in counterfeit Canadian currency being circulated in the region. In the last two weeks, police have received 11 reports of counterfeit currency all involving the same counterfeit $100 Canadian bills of the new polymer design. The bulk of the counterfeits have been found in Milton. Det. Mark Underwood of the Halton Police Fraud Unit suspects an outside group came to the region with the sole purpose of attempting to pass the bills. "Since the new polymer design you don't see as much counterfeit Canadian currency," he said. "I would be surprised if we had seen 11 incidents in the last year and now we've had 11 incidents in the last two weeks." Underwood said the counterfeits are not particularly good in that they all have the same serial number, the ink is flaking off in some cases and they have a slightly different feel than the real polymer currency. Police are reminding local merchants to be extra vigilant when accepting $100 bills especially when being used for small purchases that would maximize the amount of change given. Multiple suspects have been described passing the bills, both male and female. Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) through the web at www.haltoncrimestoppers.com or by texting "TIP201" with the message to 274637 (crimes).
