continued from p.9 On one occasion Gerda was tasked with working in a factory machine shop, however, a guard who was not informed about the change thought she was trespassing and severely beat her. The owner of the factory chastised this guard for injuring one of his workers and banned the guard from the factory. This only made things worse as the guard would wait for Gerda outside the factory and beat her when she came out. "I'm very lucky to be alive. Every night when we came he waited for me at the gate," she said. "Three years of starvation, fear, loneliness. Everyday we prayed we would see another day. They took everything away from us, but they couldn't take our hope, our faith." As the war drew to a close the commandant of the camp told the prisoners they would never be allowed to leave alive. He said explosives had been placed around the camp and that the Germans would detonate them as they withdrew. One day Gerda and the other inmates awoke to find the Germans gone. She said she later learned that Czech partisans had been active in the area and had cut the cables connected to the explosives so the Germans could not use them. She regrets she never got a chance to thank these people who saved their lives. "It is more than 70 years and I still shed tears that he never saw me grow up," she said. "He was robbed of seeing his children grow up." Gerda would spend a long time in a refugee camp, eventually making her way to Israel and finally Canada where she raised a family. When asked by a member of the Al Falah congregation what can be done to prevent future Holocausts she replied, "We've started right here," gesturing to the coming together of the two faith communities.
