Jan Hamade's penalty kick with less than two minutes to play put the Sheridan Bruins into the OCAA men's rugby championship for the first time. The penalty kick gave Sheridan a 22-19 win after Fleming College had stormed back to erase a 19-0 deficit in last Saturday's Ontario Colleges Athletic Association semifinal. A year after winning just two games and missing the playoffs, Sheridan will not only play in the championship game, it'll be hosting it. St. Lawrence College assured that when it upset the undefeated, three-time defending champion Georgian Grizzlies 28-24 in the other semifinal. The final will be Bruins host OCAA men's rugby final Sunday Garth Webb edges Mustangs in HSSAA Tier 2 football final played at the Sheridan's Trafalgar Road campus beginning at noon Sunday. Sheridan, now 7-1 this season, built a big lead in the opening half. A Matt DeCosta try in the 16th minute gave Sheridan a 5-0 advantage. Five minutes later, Andrew Zandona broke free for a long run from just inside the half, and though he got the ball over the line, he was unable to touch it down. Sheridan would score off the resulting scrum, though. Owen Schimpl swung the ball out wide to DeCosta and he scored his second try of the match. Hamade's convert upped the lead to 12-0. J.P . Munro added to Sheridan's tally with a 40-metre run in the 35th minute and Hamade's second convert made it 19-0. A yellow card to Sheridan before the half opened the door for Fleming, though. Fleming scored three minutes into the second half and then narrowed the deficit to 19-12 midway through the half. Sheridan was able to recover and push into Fleming territory. Though it didn't immediately result in points, it allowed Sheridan to burn time off the clock. A Fleming penalty in the 79th minute gave Hamade a chance to add some insurance from 35 metres out and he made no mistake. That would prove to be critical as Fleming stormed back and added a try on the final play of the match. In an exciting championship game featuring six lead changes, it was the undefeated Garth Webb Chargers who eventually came out on top, 37-30 in overtime, against the Milton Mustangs. Tuesday's Halton Secondary School Athletic Association junior Tier 2 football final at McMaster University marked the first Halton title for the Chargers, who, with Tuesday's win, finished 5-0 in a threeteam division that also featured Craig Kielburger Spartans. The Chargers, who outscored the Mustangs and Spartans 1318 in four regular-season victories, had to be considered heavy favourites against the 2-2 Mustangs, but only a game-tying 11-yard field goal by Garth Webb's Mason Peberdy with four seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and the ensuing game-winning two-yard TD run in overtime by Chargers quarterback Trent Gilbert prevented the Mustangs from pulling off a big upset.
