The newly-minted leader of the Conservative Party of Canada spoke to some 280 people at a joint Milton and Oakville Chamber of Commerce luncheon Nov. 9 at Rattlesnake Point Golf Club in Milton. Scheer took the Justin Trudeau-led Liberals to task on the huge deficit the government is leaving for the next generation. "Who would leave the mortgage payments and the lines of credits to their kids?" he said. "We do the opposite, don' t we?" He said he also disagreed with the Liberals' proposed small-business tax reforms introduced in July. "Bill Morneau (finance minister) made the largest, most egregious attack on hardworking Canadians that we've seen in a generation," he said, charging they're trying to demonize hardworking individuals who have poured their whole life into small business. Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer answered questions at a luncheon hosted by the Milton and Oakville Chambers of Commerce Nov. 9. | Nikki Wesley/Metroland He particularly disagreed with a budget bill that will see Canada join the Beijing-based Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). It allows Ottawa to transfer close to $500 million to the AIBB. "I don' t know how that helps people in the GTA," he said. That is something I am opposed to -- building bridges in other markets." During his opening remarks, Scheer thanked his deputy leader, Milton MP Lisa Raitt, who was in attendance, along with a host of other local politicians and Conservative Party supporters. He said the Conservatives are currently working on policy development and hesitated to provide statements on a few things, such as taxation on Amazon purchases -- a question from the audience. He said a federal Conservative government would look at the current housing crisis, which is driving up the costs of houses in several Canadian cities, not just the GTA. The father of five said the demand has pushed many people out of the market, and believes the easier solution is making more available by what he called "the supply side, by making it easier to shorten the approvals process (for construction)." After his formal presentation, Scheer, who was the youngest Speaker of the House of Commons prior to winning the Conservative Party leadership, was subjected to rapid-fire questions, moderated by Tim Caddigan, senior director of programming with Cogeco. To let the audience members know the man, not the politician, Scheer told guests his mom was from Mississauga, and he grew up in Port Credit. He moved to Ottawa, where his father worked in research and archives. He said his dad was interested in politics and public policy and that supper was at 5:30 p.m., followed by long chats about whatever was going on in the news. "If you asked a question, there was never a short answer," he laughed. His "something that people don' t know about him" is etymology, and he always comes up with a word of the day in the office. He met his wife at the University of Regina, where he studied history and politics. He began working in the insurance industry in Regina before being elected MP for ReginaQu'Appelle by defeating the longestserving member of the House of Commons. He was re-elected in 2006, 2008 and 2011. Since 2015, he has served as the Official Opposition House Leader. Black Friday Madness Starts Today!
