Christine and Brian Delaney are neither critics nor experts when it comes to films. They are just movie buffs who enjoy dis cussing films, and just as often as not disagree on which ones are worth see ing and which ones aren' t. When choosing movies, they have taken to following the recommendations o f friends rather than pretentious film critics. And they are hoping that our readers would appreciate the same kind o f ordinary-people opinion. R eel View will appear in The Beaver the first Friday o f each month. Three Kings Directed and written by David O. Russell Starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube Rating: R . Christine and Brian Delaney Reel View ----------------------------------------------------When Christine and I went to see Three Kings, she expected to dislike it; I was looking forward to a great action movie. But, 90 m inutes later, Christine was enthusiastically rec ommending it, ^ and I was disap pointed. I particularly like movies in which I can immerse m yself by identifying with a central has a character. I find F rien d ly F am ily it easy to sus E n v iro n m en t pend belief and escape for 90 minutes. Three Kings is being promoted as a desert/war/action flick, but it is both more and less than that. The movie is has set in the Iraqi desert at the end S o m eth in g fo r of Desert Storm. E v ery o n e When three opportunistic soldiers (Clooney, Wahlberg and Cube) find a map in an Iraqi soldier's butt while strip search ing him, they decide to take advan tage of the post-war chaos and steal a Russell may criticize the Ameri cache o f Kuwaiti gold bars from an cans for selling out the Iraqis, but he Iraqi bunker. sells out his vision of the war with They end up stealing the gold and (See `Film' on page 24) helping a group of Iraqi civilians Hamilton Spectator, 102.9 K-LHe FM escape to Iran. This means lots and O N tv Proudly Present of fighting, shooting and roaring around in a HUMVEE. So far, so good. But the plot development gets more and more improbable. At one point, Clooney's character wanders around in a fog of tear gas with little ill-effect and is rescued by the rebels who happen to have a hideout nearby. When Russell uses graphic imagery (like an exploding cow and slow motion shots of the internal and external impact of bullets) to make his point about the horror of war, you realize that this is black comedy thin ly veiled as an action movie. Then to make matters worse, he reverts to action movie form with a feel-good ending. Physical A c tiv ity . H ow m uch? How often? , as,,, w w w .paguide.com .... , J P JBS. * J !
