OCTOBER FEATURES Refinery equipment failure expels 10 tons of white powder into air By Howard Mozei OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Petro-Canada is vowing to conduct a full investiga tion, complete with public input, into last week's acci dental release of a catalytic agent into the atmosphere. According to Manager of Corporate Communications Donna Hildebrant, apparent equip ment failure caused the atmospheric release of 10 tons of the material which eventually settled mainly on properties in the Speers Road/Fourth Line area. The most obvious sign was a fine white residue on people's vehicles. The catalyst - mostly clay and sand together with aluminum oxide used in the production of gasoline - is harmless, said Hildebrant "It is not hazardous in any way," she said. "This doesn't happen very often and we are investigating the root cause." The incident took place around 8 p.m. on Sept. 30th in a catalytic cracking unit charge pump which lost suction, resulting in a "feed outage" and a pressure surge. At that point the catalyst was discharged from the stack along with the flue gas for about 20 minutes. Peter Perry, a Pinegrove Road resident described the fallout "the finest sand you'll ever see." He said he scraped about a tablespoon of the fine substance off his car. "We really do apologize to the community for any inconvenience we may have caused," said Hildebrant According to Oakville Refinery Environmental Health and Safety Co-ordinator Colleen Stevenson, the suspected culprit was "condensate in the imported gas oil feed from tankage." `The imported gas oil feed from Tank 121 is expected to be dry," said Stevenson in a letter to the Ministry of Environment and Energy. "An investiga tion is underway to determine if it was wet and if so, what caused it to be wet" Stevenson went on to explain that a mechanism designed to prevent the accidental release of material did not respond quickly enough to prevent the dis charge. Petto-Can's investigation into the matter will be conducted to ensure that a similar release does not hap pen again, said Hildebrant · Spanish Rioja · Italian Soave In Store Save $30 H om e Use Save $5 Available only at KERR C A D IL L A C P O N T IA C B U IC K IN C . 171 Speers RtL, Unit #13, Oakville 410 South Service Rd.
