Friday, October 8, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Pipelines key to north Halton development (Continued from page 1) approval of the Halton Urban Structure. This plan identified the need for additional servic ing of Milton to allow for phased-in growth. Council gave the pipelines the green light last year. Krantz - who originally thought the project might take flight after five years - joked that it only took three region al chairs, untold councillors and many more gray hairs before the project finally saw the light of day. "It seemed like yesterday that we started this," said Krantz. "But I finally did see the day it happened." The project includes 15.5 kms of watermain from Upper Middle Road in Oakville to Derry Road plus 16.6 kms of trunk sanitary sewer from Upper Middle to Laurier Avenue in Milton. Both pipelines will be constructed simultaneously and will generally run up the west side of Regional Road 25. The watermain will con- tinue along the south side of Derry Road and end about 600 metres north on Thompson Road. Construction will commence in November with the pipelines expected to be com pleted by next summer. "This has been a longawaited project," said region al chair Joyce Savoline, who commended regional staff and Council for their hard work and courage. "This has never been done before in the way it's being done." The effort - the largest design/build project in the municipal market in Ontario includes the largest sub mersible pumping station in Halton and the longest trunk sanitary sewer in the region. It also features the longest watermain constructed under one contract. The project is being fund ed by developers who have an interest in the Milton expansion area and there will be no additional cost to Halton taxpayers. Spearheading the work itself is the D 'Orazio Infrastructure Group of Oakville, together with Walter Construction and oth ers, to create a full partner ship with Halton Region. Company spokesman Jim D'Orazio said he is proud of the consortium that's been assembled to carry out the project and that a quality job is assured. "We're so glad to be a part of this," he said. "We're going to deliver it for you." Krantz tipped his hat to the development community itself, saying that the project could not have materialized without them. Oakville Ward 2 council lor and chair of the Region's Planning and Public Works Committee Kathy Graham said this is a perfect example of Halton's four communities working together for the sat isfaction of all their individ ual needs.
