I have been so busy this last while I haven't had a chance to talk to you. But here I am. Summer is gone. Winter is here and I have so much planned for the folks. Why don't you drop in and see me sometime. The youngsters are all excited about being back to Sunday School. I have received several new members this year and I am enjoying them. Come see me. J u s t a f e w w e e k s before Chris tmas on December 7, Trish Bell aimed her sights on our Prime Minister's recent trip to China with the purpose of signing a progressive trade agree- ment with Li Keqiang, Chinese Premier. This was a meeting arranged at the highest level be- t w e e n a c o u n t r y o f over a billion people, and one whose popula- tion and history dwarf in comparison. As al- most every Canadian knows by now, Trudeau g o t " s o m e t h i n g " -- like increased sales of beef--but not remotely close to what he went to accomplish. So, the spin back home began. Do we really want a trade agreement with China or do the negatives out- weigh the posi t ives? Better informed minds than the one I have will debate that question for years to come, while, as I suspect, we will try by whatever means/ spin possible to increase trade with them, pro- gressive, or not. What I found interest- ing was the commentary by two, former Lib- eral Cabinet Members and others, who said Trudeau, as our repre- sentative, came across as "naïve, patronizing, a r rogant and smug". The Chinese media ap- parently used the words "super ior"--not in a good way--and "nar- cissistic." The Canadian media was described as being "soft" on Trudeau. The word "n ice" so often used by ourselves and others was missing in action. No mat te r how we feel individually about China, whether we are talking about trade, pro- gressive trade, or no trade, our credibility as a small nation blessed with "location, loca- tion, location," as well as plentiful resources, must be handled with greater ski l l . As has been said, "You cannot play a game of checkers when your opponent is playing chess." Janet Calderwood To the Editor, The Acton Christmas Hamper Committee-- made up of the four member groups--sends sincere and heartfel t thanks to the individuals and groups in Acton and surrounding area for your support of this year 's Christmas Hamper Pro- gram. We appreciate the amount of non-perishable food donated by three of our local schools: Brook- ville, Robert Little and St. Joseph. Two winners of a church bazaar gro- cery draw donated their winnings to the hampers. Thank you to Sobeys customers for donating money and to Giant Tiger for donating a gift card for each hamper. Social media had an immediate impact on this year's do- nations. Facebook posts and sharing produced several donations of food and a quantity of money, some delivered to Acton Optical and some picked up by volunteers. We are truly grateful to all who made donations for our needy families this Christmas. Your kind- ness helped us to provide food hampers for 101 families, including 125 children. Christmas was much happier for these people because of your thoughtfulness. Thanks also to the many volunteers who gave their time to collect and sort the donated food on Thursday and Friday morning, pack the hampers on Friday afternoon and distribute them on Saturday. We ap- preciate the help of our group of faithful volun- teers. The spirit of caring and sharing is indeed alive and well here in our town. This is a wonderful place! Thanks again to all; we wish you God's blessings now and in 2018. Sincerely, Kathy Sanford, for the committee To the Editor, Mediaeval Productions is a proud promoter of lo- cal youth talent, and as such our team of local High School students and their peers have put great effort into creating our shows. We would like to thank all involved in this pro- duction and the people who attended last weeks performance. On Friday, December 15, we per- formed our third annual Christmas production fea- turing our adaptation of "A Christmas Carol", the Robert Little Glow Choir and music by "The Vis- uals" and other fun things to do. We had an amazing turn out, and we would really like to thank those who took the time to come and watch and others who gave us the moral support to get out and do this for our community. We are so happy to have the sup- port of the Acton Town Hall Centre, and in par- ticular Lloyd McIntyre who has been a tremen- dous help in staging our shows and Jon Hurst for helping with publicity. Thanks also goes out to Marie Burland, and her outstanding "Robert Lit- tle Glow Choir"--a group that is truly talented--we should be very proud of this youth group.
