McCann -- formerly of Canadian folk-rock band Great Big Sea -- will present his Help Your Self performance on Thurs., May 10, 2018 at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts (OCPA). Held in recognition of Sexual Assault Preven tion Month and Mental Health Week, McCann will tell his captivating story of surviving abuse, battling addition, and becoming sober, providing the audience with a strong message about mental health. In this genuine performance, McCann uses a combination of music and anecdotes to portray the battles many individuals face, which includes shedding light on associated stigmas and the im portance of self-help. Serving as a safe space for many, the library hopes the event will help educate community members about mental health, as well as provide comfort and insight for those with similar experi ences. The event is OPLs first fundraiser -- which also includes a silent auction -- with proceeds raised from the event used to support library re sources, services, and programming, as well as the development and revitalization of its spac es. The library will also donate a portion of the event' s proceeds to SAVIS (Sexual Assault & Vio lence Intervention Services) of Halton to aid in their work of helping survivors of violence. O Oakville Public Regular and VIP tickets are now available to purchase through the OCPA box office or the OCPA website. Both ticket-types offer admit tance to the performance as well as a charitable tax receipt. In addition, VIP ticket-holders are invited to attend an exclusive meet-and-greet reception and will receive a seat in the theatre' s preferred viewing section. The library is currently seeking event spon sors and has secured Schiavone Diamond as its first `The Novelist' sponsor, in addition to Pen guin Random House Canada, Arsenal Cleaning Services Ltd., and an anonymous donor as `The Poet' sponsors.
