"It has also implemented a n ew whistleblower program, where employees will have the ability to anonymously report on acts of misconduct and inappropriate behaviour. "Given the current high number of sexual harassment cases com ing forward across professions, including the policing profession, and given recent findings relating to police culture and sexual harassment, (the) Halton Regional Police Services Board could be a leader by proactively taking measures to ensure a workplace free of sexual harassment," the report added. It also alluded to several outside sources of information on the subject, including Lesley Bikos, a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at Western University, w h o discussed Police Culture: The Old Boys Club and the Role of Police Governance in Shaping a Healthier Service, during a June 22, 2017 Canadian Association o f Police Governance webinar. She noted that a culture of secrecy and discrimination continues in police services and that in-house policies are just w indow dressing unless they are enforced. In interviews she conducted w ith police officers, she wrote, she heard that sexism, racism and homophobia are present in police culture, that sexual violence and harassment are ` very prominent', w ith m en also reporting being harassed, that officers feel it can be a `careerender' if you report others, there is perceived corruption w ith the internal investigation process, the perception that popular officers will not be investigated properly, that policing is about fitting into the group, and that officers are being overworked. The Halton polices services board report cited the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) as defining sexual harassment as "a type of discrimination based on sex. W hen som eone is sexually harassed in the workplace, it can undermine their sense of personal dignity. It can prevent them from earning a living, doing their job effectively or reaching their full potential. Sexual harassment can also poison the environment for everyone else". The Halton police services board report says that according to the OHRC, "A person does not have to directly refer to another person' s gender or be openly sexual for the behaviour to violate the code. For example, targeting an individual because of their sex and discouraging or driving them away from continuing to w ork in a position is harassment. The OHRC states, "Employers can prevent m any cases of sexual harassment by having a clear, comprehensive anti-sexual harassment policy in place. Policies m ust clearly set out how the sexual harassment will be dealt with promptly and efficiently." Give a gift. A year of safe travels & rewards for them!
